How I Work

A strength-based approach
I work from a strengths-based, person-centered and systemic therapy framework. Which basically means, I believe every person has the strength to meet their full potential and I aim to support my clients in discovering these strengths. Part of our work may include increasing awareness of how you experience your relationships (family and other) such as patterns of interaction and feelings.
Being flexible and creative
When it’s appropriate and if you are comfortable, we may use art making, sand tray therapy, or even get out for a walk to support you in new ways of expressing and understanding yourself.
I know therapy can be hard and uncomfortable at times. Because you feel like you should do it on your own. Society still expects us to do this and considers it weak and yet it actually takes a lot of strength and courage to go to therapy.
There can be laughter
I believe laughter and a sense of humour can contribute to healing and connection. Just as we share laughter in our outside therapy life, we can also experience it when working on difficult things.
When appropriate, I include humour in our work as a way to understand or create ease when exploring new things. It is also helpful to laugh at the irrationality of some of our experiences or behaviours.
As a therapist, I strive to provide the highest standard of care.
My goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for you to explore and understand your struggles and/or discomfort.
I provide therapy that is collaborative, educational, and healing.
I recognize the importance of meeting you where you are at and utilizing approaches that meet your unique needs.
I value the importance of staying current with leading approaches in counselling. I have continued to study and attend trainings in the areas of couples and family therapy, as well as healing trauma and anxiety through art therapy, somatic and cognitive behavioural approaches.
More than just a Counsellor
Before pursuing my Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology, I worked extensively in early childhood education, child, youth, and family support work, as well as within the elementary school system as an Educational Assistant.
As a Counsellor, I have worked at a non-profit counselling agency, government organization, and within a private sector clinic. These opportunities supported me in expanding my knowledge and experience with clients from varying age groups, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as diverse life journeys.
I had the honour and privilege to travel, work with and learn from people living in various Yukon communities.
Working through struggles, loss, and unpredictability
Different work environments bring new learnings and challenges. I have a unique understanding of the harms that can occur within our work. I was able to turn these experiences into teachings and as a reminder of my core values as a Counsellor and human being.
To work and live from a place of transparency, respect, integrity, and empathy.
A new beginning
Poplar and Pine Creative Therapy opened January 2023 and is operated from my home outside of city limits. Owning my own practice allows me to engage and specialize in work that excites me, allows me to be closer to nature, and to focus on connection. Also, my intention is to infuse more creativity, curiosity, and wonder in all parts of my life.
If you are looking to reconnect with your authentic self and are ready to explore who you are in a different way, I can help.
